The Lega del Filo d’Oro Onlus, an association recognised as a non-profit organisation, was founded in 1964 to assist, educate and rehabilitate the deafblind and multisensory impaired. It has become unique in Italy in the last 40 years and one of the most qualified institutions in Europe for the treatment of this disability.
Its head office is in Osimo (AN). Here there is the Rehabilitation Centre, well-known in the Marches as “a special unit for the deafblind and multisensory impaired”. It can accommodate 56 full-time users, 15 day care users and offer consultations and home visits. The Centre offers diagnostic and rehabilitation services for children, young people and adults. Other residential health and social Centres are in Lesmo (MI), Molfetta (BA) and Termini Imerese (PA). The Lega del Filo d’Oro also has seven regional services to help operations at a national level. These are in Rome, Naples, Osimo, Molfetta, Modena, Lesmo, Termini Imerese.
The Lega del Filo d’Oro is working on another important project – opening the Social Rehabilitation “ComeTe” Centre in Modena. Work is almost finished and the opening is planned for some time in 2012.
The projects undertaken by the Lega del Filo d’Oro are only partially financed from public funds. Therefore one particular section of the association is dedicated to intensive awareness and fund raising at a national level. Donors account for 70% of the income of the association. In recent years, thanks to substantial support, the Lega del Filo d’Oro has succeeded in increasing and enlarging the scope of its activities so that it can more fully meet the needs, both quantitatively and qualitatively, of the deafblind population.
LFDO collaborated with ISTC-CNR in developing and testing the first prototype of the Block Magic technology, showing its effectiveness in the rehabilitation of children with low vision. LFDO will contribute this experience to Block Magic, together with its deep knowledge of the needs of young learners with sensorial disabilities. More specifically, LFDO will manage WP6 (Trial: summative evaluation) and coordinate the Italian branch of the trial, where it will work with children with disabilities who receive their education in normal pre- or primary school.
LFDO will also coordinate the Italian branch of the formative evaluation (WP4) and will contribute to the definition of the Block Magic Methodology (WP3), where it will contribute its knowledge of children with disabilities. In WP8, LFDO will explore mechanisms, allowing free distribution of Block Magic to schools and NGOs providing education to children with disabilities.
